Ron Mueck Reflection Moment:
1. If you could buy one, would you? Why/Why not?
Yes, I would buy one if I could because the techniques and materials are very unique because it shows a really realistic appearance by having a smooth skin-like effect. Not only the surface is very eye-catching, the impression that is conveyed from the body language is also very impressive. In most of Mueck's artworks, he sculpted very accurate details mainly on sculpture's face to create a close feeling with audiences which infers lots of personal experiences from the artist. I think the sensible contact between audience and sculpture is the most important reason that attracts me to buy one.
2. Which one do you personally connect with the most? Why?
I think the sculpture "In Bed" connects with me the most because I always have the same depressing mood in the morning when i am too stressful to start the day. By look at the lady's facial expression, the redness and wrinkles around the eyes implies the long history behind the simple scene. I think the incredible expression reminds me of the day when I moved away from my friends, when i missed my friendships but can't do anything about it.
3. Do you feel that he can show a limb or part of a figure other than the face and still make a successful sculpture?
No, I think without the face it can't be a successful sculpture. Even though all of the body structures are very realistic on each sculpture, the face is still one of the most necessary elements that tells audiences artist's idea because every kind of looking can tell various stories. Back in the Middle Ages when sculptures were very important in Roman Empire, the faces of famous sculptures represented the person's identity, position, power according to their emotion, expression and character. The interest of human faces in Roman sculptures originally began during the period when 'likeness and idealization' or 'realistic and idealizing' elements were emphasized by the stylistic cycle. As a result, i think Mueck's works can't be that successful without showing the faces.
4. Sketch what you would do in your sketchbook.
