ARTIST MOMENT #6

David Cerny.

1. His work has been seen as offensive and shouldn't be in public, what do you think?

- Although, David Cerny's artworks seemed offensive when putting them in public, I still think these works are not inappropriate because the meanings behind the works are actually reflecting the obscured truths among our communities. Many of his works even contain lots of identical social issues and events. For instance, in the 'Tower Babies'  on Zizkov TV Tower, the composition of the babies on the tower represents the hope that German asylum seekers carries in 1989.

← question 1 continues:

- The controversies remind me of two Chinese young artists/brothers called the "Gao Brothers." The symbolic characteristic that their artworks have on Chinese Mao is that they always sculpt Mao's head and body seperately in order to emphasize their hatred of China's communism ruled by Mao.

-One of the most argumentative artworks of Mao, "Mao's Guilt", fully showed how Gao Zhen and Gao Qiang wanted the head to be the attractive object. Because audiences will naturally look and the body after staring at the head, the process of moving eyes on the sculpture combines Mao's 'guilt' that the sculpture's supposed to present.

             - Another artwork of mao is named as "Execution of Chirst". By looking at the focuses in this work, we can easily understand that Mao is abusing his power by letting others to execute christ while he doesn't even bother. When looking at it closely, we can figure out that people who were firing at the naked christ were the duplications of Mao.

2. Often his work is about a certain real life issue, what issue do you recommend he confronts next in his art?

- I recommend he confronts the theme of cyberbully sculpture because cyberbully is a world-wide social issue these days and our world has not figure out an effective solution yet. (read more about social issue? click here) By showing how technology is threatening teenagers in real life, people can actually feel and be warned when they are facing at the sculptures. This can not only be an influencial topic, it can also be a solution for solving the cyberbully problems around the world, especially at schools.
