ARTIST MOMENT #5

Drew Lausman.

The death of Drew's brother and the fireworks he left for drew inspired his artwork "explosionism".

- Is there anyone or anything that inspires you to do something like "explosionism"? Describe the person/thing, how it inspires you, and what the artwork could resemble it.

- My older brother is one of the main people who inspires a lot, especially in my childhood. The way that his artstyle influence my idea is the feeling of his artworks. When looking at some of his works from a far distance, the sense is bold and unstrained, however, if i look closer I can still find very detailed parts. Later, I started to put bold elements into some precise parts in my art in order to stand out the area by using different kind of shading variously.  I think this art technique relates to the explosionism because although explosion in most people's mind is unshaped and intangible, but Drew still creates lots of incredible details in his arts which is similar to how bold/shading lines can bring attention to the preciseness.

-Would his unique way of making art add to the artwork's value?

- Drew's unique way of making art definitely would add to the artwork's value because Drew sacrifices his safety to art which shows his obsession over his inspiration from his brother. The process of making the explosion is very dangerous, especially he did it without any goggles or gloves. Also, Drew's orinigal idea of creating painting out of an explosing process is the most attractive thing to the public because he breaks the rule of how explosion should be in general people's minds. I think this huge influence in spray art industry is even more valuable than his idea of using fireworks.

-Would you do this if you could? Is this art to you?

- I would do this if i could because i've never heard that using fireworks can create art just like a painting. However, I do think having no protection in this big explosion is very dangerous since the canvas has to be close to the fireworks. The way that some New York artists do these kinds of dangerous explosion art is to use technology instead of actual hands. The world's first spray-painting model, Spraycopter, was invented by a well-knowned street/graffiti artist called Katsu. The advantage of using Spraycopter is that artist can adjust how high it goes by controlling the radio sensor so that street artists don't need to worry about the height of the wall. This is art to me because art doesn't have to include lots of techniques and shapes, as long as the artist put his own ideas, inspiration and efforts in his works. Drew definitely put enough efforts in his works, and because of his brother's death, explosionism not only enlightened him, it gives vitality to his works as well.
